The Idea of Wellness

Updated: Feb 18, 2019

What exactly is wellness? How do we know we’ve achieved it? Are we even conscious of our own wellness? Everything you need to know and more!

Wellness may be a new concept for some of us, but it’s certainly no secret that the idea of wellness has gained tremendous popularity in recent years. It seems as though everywhere we look, we’re being flooded with ways that we can improve our wellness, or achieve our peak wellness, or how we can take certain steps to help us achieve a heightened sense of wellness. But at the end of the day, do we even know what true wellness actually is? Let’s break it down!

Wellness

Wellness literally means the state of being well, or to live in good health, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. So, we may think we’re well, we may think we live a life centered around wellness. Sure, somedays we may feel down, or tired, or frustrated, or stressed, but overall, we live happy lives – right? Well, this isn’t true wellness! In fact, wellness goes beyond having good and bad days.

Let’s take a look at an example:

A water well is a structure that has been dug deep into the ground that allows us to access fresh, filtered ground water. For us, water is a source of life. When we crave water, we’ll do anything to get it. Our body depends on it; water sustains life. A dry well serves us no benefits. A full well, on the other hand, is clean, pure, and helps to sustain life.

Now, let’s take a look at our own lives. When your well has run dry, you lose your ability to live. When you lose yourself, when you lose your sense of identity, when you skip out on those things that make you unique, you begin to deprive your body of that much needed source of energy that sustains our mental wellbeing. And this, is exactly how we can achieve wellness.

Living

If you want to achieve a true sense of wellness, you have to learn to live for yourself and live from within. Most importantly, you need to let go of outside obligations and outside expectations, and instead, focus on satisfying your own personal needs.

At the end of the day, understanding that you have the power to tap into your own wellness is crucial towards ensuring you achieve it. We all have the power in us, it’s just up to us to exercise that power.
