How The Power of Rhythm, Movement, & Music Can Increase Your Happiness!
Is there anything you love more than attending a live concert of your favorite band? What about rocking out to your favorite song in the car? Or maybe you love to sing and dance in the shower as if you were your favorite singer/songwriter. Why do you do it? How does it make you feel? It’s no secret that for music lovers, they simply can’t imagine a world without it. There’s a reason for this, and in fact, it may even come as a surprise!
Rhythm, movement, and music have a unique ability to captivate our minds and leave us feeling pleasant, refreshed, peaceful, serene, energetic, and all of the above! But why? How exactly does the right combination of rhythm, movement, and music cause such intense emotional responses in our bodies?
Music Takes Us on A Journey
When it comes to music, our brains work to transport us to a different place. Music allows us to think and feel in ways that we may not be predisposed to normally think or feel. In addition, it has the power to expand our interpretation of our own feelings, as well as the world around us.
To break this down a bit, let’s look at a study published by the peer reviewed journal, Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience. This particular study was part of a larger exploration into the effects of tempo and rhythm as it relates to our emotions. After testing in a sample of senior citizens, the researchers determined that “tempo clearly determines whether music sounds sad or happy.” They went on to say that words such as “stressing, expressive, and amusing” were attributed to songs with faster tempos, and “relaxing, expressionless, and boring” were used to describe songs with slower tempos. Simply looking at the words reported by the sample, we can gain a deeper understanding into how we perceive rhythm and tempo in music.

Their description reads, “We combine immersive media with advances in intelligent technologies and psychedelic science to improve wellbeing. WavePaths develops an entirely new category of mobile tools and physical spaces that deepen your connection with yourself and others.”
As a truly innovative service, WavePaths has worked to understand the research behind the ways in which rhythm, movement, and music can influence our emotions and improve our wellbeing.
Our Conclusions
The power of rhythm and music could not be any more clearly stated. In fact, these benefits have been recognized for millennia, with ancient societies creating their own forms of rhythm and music to symbolize a number of different occurrences and events.
In addition, sound meditation has increased significantly in popularity in recent years, as fellow meditators listen to soft sounds, ambient noise, and relaxing tones that allow them to connect with their inner soul on a whole new level.
What do you think? Does music have the power to heal?
